You AMG Too Much, Benzo!

Seriously, you only get two trims now considered Mercedes-“Benz” for each model. However you get your AMG-lite with the 43 models. Your regular M-competiting AMGs are the 45 and 63 models (though the next 450 hp straight six E-Class will be the AMG E50). Then you have your AMG “S” models, followed by the AMG “R” models. Now they are saying we are getting an AMG “RS” level and “Black Series” is still on the table!

I’m telling you all that 75% of Mercedes will have AMG designations before the decade ends. Then remember that Maybach trims will use AMG engines and I think you see that Benz is dead. Long live Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-AMG Maybach.

How do you feel about the base C300 becoming the AMG C30 / C33 next refresh? No more 3-digit Mercedes vehicles unless they are a Maybach?

Frankly it’s not like the lease special C300 4MATIC or GLC 300 on the lots don’t already have an “AMG Sport” package already installed. You need to special order a proper Mercedes these days it seems. And by proper I mean a luxury grille and a gunsight.

Meh. It’s just marketing. The actual product is what matters, and as long as that’s good, so what? You could say AMG is no longer as exclusive as it used to be, but the customers want AMGs, and baby gets what baby wants.

I’m okay with this. When all of your models are the performance model, you’re definitely doing something cool.

This just makes buying an AMG less exclusive. I think they will start to lose customers off the top end.

AMG lost exclusivity with products developed after the merger/acquisition. Since then, production is way up. Now marketing is a big part of it - the margins on these new models will be yuuuuge.

The only bit that really irks me is using two digit numbers for models that aren’t the full tuned package. Otherwise, I see it as no different from the various three digit M and plain S cars which are also half-baked tuning, not to mention the mildly tuned R-spec cars and GSF. It’s what the market wants.
